Inteview with TweakerRay, producer/songwriter of "Future Noir"
How did you get in contact with the music of Hanin Elias?
I think my brother played her music to me. He listened to Atari Teenage Riot and Alec Empire quiet a long time and showed me a few pieces. First I couldn't get right into the music. But I liked one song at the first go: „Tie me to the wall“ . I think I liked it because of the cool video, too.
How and where did you get in contact with Hanin ?
That was on 21st. of may in 2003 at Hanin`s cocert in Hamburg. We saw the concert and afterwards we had the chance to talk a little to her and Phillip. We already knew Phillip from a DJ Event.I gave him a cd with selected songs written by my bandproject SPITE. On this cd were some remixes I did, too. I hoped to get a feedback about my music. It was an ingenious evening and an unforgettable powerful concert!
Why did Hanin want to record any songs with you ?
Phillip liked the cd with the songs I’ve made and Hanin liked them, too. Phillip gave me Hanins email address to get in contact with her. She also wanted a cd with the songs. Then I read in the fatal recordings forum that someone wanted to make a remix of the Hanin`s songs and while I was already in contact with Hanin, I asked her , if I could do a remix, too. She asked me if I rather would like to do a complete song for her. I thought this would be an exciting idea and so I agreed immediately.
Which song was the first you recorded with Hanin ?
That was “Untouchable”. Hanin was so inspired by the raw instrumental version of the song and had instantly a title. She spoke it on my answeringmachine. I worked a little further on that song and did not know wether I should give her a melody-idea or not, because I could not imagine how someone could sing over the instrumental version. I decided to give Hanin a free hand. She traveled to Hamburg and we recorded „Untouchable“. When I had heard her first take I was really surprised about the melody and the lyrics which fitted the instrumental so well. I was glad I heave not made a melodyline before. Now the song sounded so good with the vocals as if it had been composed with this new melody. After that song we recorded War / Extreme V4. Originally it was a song of my bandproject: SPITE. We also made some shots for the video,my brother works on.
TweakerRay is a very strange name. How did you get this name?
I always liked the name Ray. And as an artist's name I did not want something that already exists. I wanted one single word. Freely translated Tweak signifies in the audioworld changing or tuning audio. And I have simply combined the words Tweak and Ray.
So it became something new.
Tell us a little bit more about your music career. When did you start to produce music?
I started to make music with an old Amiga 500 in the late eighties . And since then I developed more and more with some more professional gear. And started to get much further in 1999. Together with my friend H. Gunawan we started the Bandproject SPITE. I did three remixes for the industrialband KIEW. And I also composed the soundtracks for some amateur-films of my friends. And then there came the collaboration with Hanin. We did also some
vocalrecordings for Pzychobitch.
Who are you inspired by ?
Oh! This is a good and difficult question. I think that all kind of music I hear is inspiring anyhow. When I have to name some groups, I would have to mention: Sisters of Mercy, Nine Inch Nails, Depeche Mode, Pixies, Einstürzende Neubauten and Atari Teenage Riot. There would be many more I could name, but at first that is enough.
Please, name your ten favorite cds at the moment !
